The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has reported the presence of a Chinese-flagged research vessel, named "SHEN KUO," in waters northeast of Viga, Catanduanes. The vessel was initially sighted on April 25, approximately 60.9 nautical miles east of Rapu-Rapu Island, Albay.

According to the latest reports from Tactical Operations Wing, Southern Luzon (TOWSOL), who conducted maritime patrol (MARPAT) on April 27, the vessel was observed lying-to in the area with no personnel visible on the main deck. Despite several attempts to establish contact through regular radio channels, the vessel remained unresponsive, raising concerns about its intentions and activities.

The AFP has emphasized its commitment to vigilance, monitoring any unauthorized presence of research vessels within Philippine maritime territory. Enhanced surveillance measures have been put in place, with nearby vessels tasked to report any suspicious activity.

Furthermore, the AFP is actively coordinating with relevant agencies to address the unauthorized presence of the "SHEN KUO" and investigate any potential illegal activities within the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This collaborative effort underscores the government's dedication to safeguarding national security and protecting Philippine waters from any infringement.
