Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Undersecretary Atty. Benjo Benavidez highlighted the option of implementing a four-day workweek as part of what he termed "flexible work arrangements." According to Benavidez, these arrangements are at the discretion of employers, to be decided upon in consultation with their employees.

"'Yung tinatawag po nating four-day workweek, isa po ito sa mga tinatawag nating flexible work arrangement. Ito pong mga flexible work arrangement, ito po ay prerogatiba at option ng mga employer in consultation na rin sa mga manggagawa, patungkol po sa pagi-implement po nito so hindi po ito bago sino man pong employer o kumpanya ay maari po silang mag pa tupad ng 4 day work week, pwede po nilang baguhin ang normal na work week ng isang kumpanya," Benavidez explained.

The concept of a four-day workweek has gained attention globally as a potential means of improving work-life balance, reducing commuting costs, and enhancing overall employee satisfaction. However, its implementation varies across industries and regions.

When asked if he would recommend the adoption of a four-day workweek, Benavidez emphasized the importance of considering the specific needs of each company.

"Depende po doon sa pangangailangan ng kumpanya. Kung yan po ay talagang masisigurado natin yung kaligtasan nung mga manggagawa o kaya mas mame-maintain natin o lalo nating ma-i-improve ‘yung productivity pa nung kumpanya, then why not?" he remarked.

Benavidez's remarks underscore the need for employers to assess the potential benefits and challenges associated with alternative work arrangements, taking into account factors such as workforce requirements, operational efficiency, and employee well-being.

As discussions around work flexibility continue to evolve, stakeholders are encouraged to explore innovative approaches that prioritize both business objectives and the welfare of workers. The consideration of options like the four-day workweek reflects a growing recognition of the diverse needs and preferences within today's labor market.
