The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has declared the partial closure of the southbound section of the EDSA-Kamuning flyover in Quezon City for a duration of six months, starting on May 1.

This decision comes as part of a proactive measure by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to initiate the phased retrofitting of the flyover, starting April 25.

The retrofitting endeavor aims to reinforce the structure of the EDSA-Kamuning flyover, enhancing its resilience against potential natural disasters such as earthquakes. Expected to reach full accessibility by October 25, the project underscores the government's commitment to bolstering infrastructure integrity in anticipation of seismic events like "The Big One."

MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes stressed the importance of rehabilitation efforts at a press conference. He advised motorists to steer clear of the affected area, highlighting that while one and a half lanes will be occupied by re-decking works, public utility buses will still have access via the EDSA bus carousel.

Artes also disclosed that the agency would explore the possibility of permitting emergency vehicles to utilize the busway on a case-by-case basis, ensuring swift response during contingencies. Moreover, to mitigate traffic congestion resulting from the partial closure, motorists, especially private vehicle owners, are encouraged to utilize designated Mabuhay Lanes as alternative routes.

Before implementing the closure, MMDA will conduct comprehensive clearing operations in collaboration with various agencies and local government units to ensure unimpeded passage through alternate routes. Additionally, directional traffic signs will be strategically placed, and traffic marshals deployed to assist affected motorists.

Private vehicles are advised to consider the following alternate routes:

- EDSA/Quezon Avenue (SB) → Panay Avenue → Sgt. Esguerra Avenue → Timog Avenue → EDSA Service Road
- EDSA/Quezon Avenue (SB) → Mo. Ignacia Avenue → Sgt. Esguerra Avenue → 11th Jamboree Avenue → Kamuning Road
- EDSA/Quezon Avenue (SB) → Eugenio Lopez Jr. Dr/Scout Borromeo St. → Sgt. Esguerra Avenue → Timog Avenue
- Eugenio Lopez Jr. Dr/Scout Borromeo St. → Samar Avenue → Timog Avenue
