President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. marked Labor Day with a directive ordering government wage bodies to promptly assess and modify worker wages in response to inflationary pressures. In a speech at Malacañan Palace, he instructed Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Boards to expedite reviews of minimum wage rates, emphasizing completion within 60 days prior to the anniversary of their latest wage order. Additionally, he urged the National Wages and Productivity Commission to streamline rules for consistent wage reviews, issuance, and implementation to mitigate uncertainty and ensure fairness.

The President emphasized the necessity of these actions to alleviate the impact of rising commodity prices on laborers. In tandem with these efforts, he called on Congress to enact legislation supportive of job creation initiatives, including the Enterprise-based Education and Training Program law, the Revised Apprenticeship Program Act, and the CREATE MORE law. This call follows the enactment of Republic Act No. 11962, known as the Trabaho Para sa Bayan Act, which targets unemployment and underemployment.

Notably, recent collaborations between the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have produced implementing rules for this legislation, underscoring a concerted effort to address labor market challenges. In response to inflationary pressures, the government has provided emergency employment to 5.66 million individuals through the Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers program, alongside support for livelihood programs and skills development initiatives.

To fortify job security, DOLE has allocated PHP 9.18 billion in its Fiscal Year 2024 budget to enhance employability programs. These comprehensive measures reflect a proactive approach to bolstering the welfare of Filipino workers amidst economic fluctuations.
