President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Energy (DOE) and pertinent agencies to expedite the implementation of measures aimed at advancing the electric vehicle (EV) industry in the Philippines, with a particular emphasis on the public transportation sector.

Despite aspirations for 2.45 million EVs and 65,000 EV charging stations (EVCS) by 2028, the Philippines currently falls short of its targets.

During a recent sectoral meeting on EV industry development, President Marcos underscored the urgency for addressing challenges such as lowering production costs, facilitating financing, and bolstering charging infrastructure to foster a robust EV ecosystem.

President Marcos emphasized, "It’s the cost of production. Let’s focus on that for now – cost of production and financing. I think, that’s it. Cost of production and financing and the charging infrastructure."

The government is actively examining the transition process to EVs, aligning with the EV Industry Development Act (EVIDA) to expedite the adoption of EVs, enhance energy security, and curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The Comprehensive Roadmap for the EV Industry (CREVI) outlines strategies including demand generation, policy formulation, manufacturing enhancement, human resource development, and research and development to achieve set objectives.

DOE Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella highlighted the agency's commitment to strategic responsiveness, aiming to ensure the success of the government's EV transition efforts.
