Philippine Coast Guard
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela provided an update regarding the Chinese Coast Guard and Chinese maritime militia vessels spotted by the PCG on Pag-asa Island in a public briefing on Tuesday, March 7.
According to Tarriela, PCG personnel stationed on each island in the West Philippine Sea are continuing to communicate with the Chinese Coast Guards, but so far, they have not received any response from them.
He added that the Coast Guard station on Pag-asa Island continues to challenge the Chinese vessels over the radio, stating that the 12 nautical miles around Pag-asa Island is the territorial sea of the Philippines and the country has sovereignty over it.
Despite the Philippines' challenge, Tarriela said that China continues to ignore their calls, and the PCG vessels and personnel stationed on each island in the West Philippine Sea continue to challenge the Chinese maritime militia and Coast Guard vessels that are circling the area.
This update comes amidst growing concerns over China's aggressive actions in the region, including the presence of Chinese vessels near Philippine-occupied territories in the West Philippine Sea.
