Foreigners Arrested For Disrespecting Philippine Flag

Four foreign nationals were apprehended and detained following an incident involving the desecration of the Philippine National Flag. Sharoon Manzoor, 29, Shahid Manzoor, 45, and Shamail Jalal, 36, all Pakistani nationals, along with Ioan Oprescu y Emil, 36, a Romanian national, were arrested in connection with the violation of Sec 34 (I) Paragraph (a) of RA 8491, commonly known as the "Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines."

According to the report filed by PBGen Carlito M Gaces, the Regional Director of PRO CALABARZON, the incident occurred on June 26, 2023, at 5:40 AM at Marine Base Gregorio Lim (MBGL) in Sitio Calumpang, Brgy Sapang 1, Ternate, Cavite. The authorities were alerted to the incident at 1:30 PM on the same day.

Sgt. Joylin R Rojo, a Philippine Marine stationed at MBGL, played a crucial role in the arrest of the suspects. Reports indicate that the suspects were caught red-handed disrespecting the Philippine National Flag, forcibly pulling and damaging it before carelessly discarding it in a nearby grassy area. Prompt action by Sgt. Rojo led to their immediate apprehension and subsequent transfer to the nearest police station for further processing.

The inquest proceedings for the case were conducted on June 26, 2023, under docket number INQ-23F-1525, with Prosecutor Emmanuel Rivera presiding over the proceedings.

Reacting to the incident, Police General Benjamin C Acorda Jr, the Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), highlighted the severity of the offense. He stressed, "Disrespecting the Philippine National Flag is a grave violation that demands our utmost attention and must not be disregarded. It is our duty to uphold the honor and dignity of our flag, and individuals found guilty of such acts will be held accountable under the law."

The PNP remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of national symbols and pledges to enforce the laws governing their proper treatment. General Acorda reiterated the importance of upholding the dignity of the Philippine National Flag and the significance it holds for the nation and its people.

The PNP expressed gratitude to Sgt. Joylin R Rojo for her vigilance and dedication in apprehending the suspects. Additionally, they extended their appreciation to all those involved in the collaborative efforts to ensure the enforcement of the law in this case.
