The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) are teaming up to launch a digital driver's license in the Philippines. This move is in line with President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s directive to implement digitization across government agencies.

The digital license will serve as an electronic alternative to the physical driver's license card and can be accessed through a "super app" being developed by the DICT. LTO Chief Jay Art Tugade explained that the digital license would be equivalent to the physical driver's license and can be presented to law enforcement officers during apprehension. Additionally, the super app would function similarly to a wallet, containing all government IDs, among other things, within one's mobile device.

Aside from replacing the paper-based Official Receipt (OR) as the temporary driver's license, the digital license can also be used for various transactions with the LTO, including license and registration renewals, as well as online payments. In terms of security, Tugade assured the public that the digital license would have the same security features as the physical driver's license, along with additional measures integrated into the super app.

Tugade emphasized that the LTO's partnership with the DICT aims to push for the digitalization of more services and transactions, which can ultimately aid in eradicating corruption within the agency. This collaboration is part of the LTO and DICT's e-governance partnership, which was formalized in March and seeks to enhance the digitalization of systems and processes within the LTO for more efficient and effective public service.

With the upcoming launch of the digital driver's license, the public can look forward to a more convenient and secure way of presenting their driver's license, as well as engaging in transactions with the LTO through the "super app."
