In anticipation of an impending water crisis and the looming El Niño phenomenon, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced that the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Response and Management Council (MMDRRMC) and local government units (LGUs) in the region are taking proactive steps to establish contingency measures.
Atty. Don Artes, the Acting Chairman of MMDA and concurrent MMDRRMC Chairman, disclosed that all 17 LGUs in Metro Manila have formed their respective task forces to devise preparations and contingency plans to alleviate the impact of El Niño in their respective cities.
Each LGU's task force has been tasked with formulating proposed plans, which will be submitted to the Metro Manila Council (MMC) for review and coordination. The MMC is scheduled to convene before the end of this month to consolidate the recommendations and coordinate with relevant government agencies for potential implementation and replication in other regions. Atty. Artes emphasized the importance of collaboration and unified efforts to effectively address the challenges posed by the impending water crisis and El Niño phenomenon.
The MMDA is actively collaborating with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) to monitor the water supply and regulate its usage throughout Metro Manila. In addition, they are exploring ways to recycle treated wastewater from various Sewerage Treatment Plants in coordination with the MWSS. Atty. Artes also revealed that the agency is considering procuring a device equipped with a filtration system that can extract water from the air, potentially providing an alternative water source.
With regards to disaster preparedness, the MMDA is conducting Water Search and Rescue Training for responders and rescuers from different LGUs. They are also employing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras along waterways to monitor water levels and ensure early detection of potential hazards. Recently, the agency has acquired four boats to enhance their capacity for rescue operations in flood-prone areas.
Atty. Artes further assured the public that all 71 pumping stations in Metro Manila are fully operational, and continuous declogging operations are being carried out to mitigate flooding in the metropolis. The MMDA remains committed to addressing the challenges ahead and ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents of Metro Manila.
As the water crisis and El Niño phenomenon approach, the collaborative efforts of the MMDA, MMDRRMC, and LGUs in Metro Manila aim to mitigate potential risks and secure alternative water sources, while also focusing on disaster preparedness and response capabilities to safeguard the region's population from the adverse effects of these natural occurrences.
