National Security Adviser Eduardo Año defended the placement of buoys in the West Philippine Sea, asserting that it was not a provocation but rather an obligation of the Philippines under international law.
Año emphasized that the country was simply ensuring compliance with the international rule of law and asserting its sovereign rights.
"We are just ensuring that we are following the international rule of law and making sure that we are asserting our sovereign rights," Año stated during an interview with SMNI.
He said that as a member of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and a coastal state, it is the Philippines' responsibility to implement safety measures for travelers.
Año explained that one of these measures is the placement of buoys, which serve as markers, indicating specific locations and warning navigators about shallow areas.
He added that the presence of the Philippine flag on the buoys reinforces the country's exclusive economic zone as recognized by an arbitrary ruling.
Año emphasized that the placement of buoys in the West Philippine Sea aligns with the international order and rule of law.
He urged the public to view the issue in the correct perspective, explaining that it should not be considered a provocation. Instead, he highlighted that it is the responsibility of a coastal nation like the Philippines to implement such measures.
Año firmly stated that the Philippines is not the aggressor or provocateur in this situation but rather seeks to uphold international law and assert its sovereign rights.
