NTC Issues 30-Day Suspension To SMNI
FILE
In response to House Resolution No. 189, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has issued a Show Cause Order accompanied by a Thirty (30)-day Suspension Order against Swara Sug Media Corporation, trading as Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI), dated 19 December 2023.
The NTC, acting upon the House's resolution, directs Swara Sug to provide a written explanation within fifteen (15) days, justifying its actions amidst alleged violations of its franchise conditions under Republic Act No. 11422.
Citing Section 16 (n) of the Public Service Act, the NTC justified the thirty (30)-day suspension of Swara Sug's radio and television operations. This action is rooted in the House of Representatives' claim, as per Resolution No. 189, that Swara Sug has breached at least three (3) provisions of its legislative franchise.
The NTC's decision to defer to the House of Representatives' determination underscores the significance of legislative authority concerning franchise matters. Notably, the NTC actively participated in three (3) committee hearings conducted by the House of Representatives' Committee on Legislative Franchises, leading to the issuance of Resolution No. 189.
An administrative hearing by the NTC is scheduled for 04 January 2024 following the issuance of the Order, marking a pivotal step in evaluating the alleged violations by Swara Sug Media Corporation.
