Nurse calls attention to medical frontliners’ struggles through TikTok video

Nurse Jazzmin Angel Comaling, who works at a private hospital in Quezon City, described on TikTok the hardships of being a frontliner in the fight against Covid-19.

Jazzmin was the sole nurse in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the time she made the TikTok clip, as most of her colleagues were hit by the disease. All of the patients were sleeping and there was no one to talk to, so she decided to make a video.

"Nag shoot ako at naisip ko ito na lang kay Mimiyuuuh kasi patok. Naisip ko maganda rin 'yung sound. Ginawa ko rin siya bilang opportunity para ilagay sa captions kung ano 'yung reality na pinagdadaanan ng mga nurses, ng mga frontliners, atsaka ng healthcare workers," Jazzmin said.

(I decided to make a video inspired by Mimiyuuuh because it was a hit. I also liked the sounds. I took the opportunity to put captions reflecting the reality nurses, frontliners, and healthcare workers go through.)

The hospital has seen an increase in the number of patients. This also increased the risk for hospital staff to get hit with the coronavirus. A ward was closed because workers in that area got infected. Some of Jazzmin’s colleagues resigned.

Jazzmin meanwhile was delighted that Mimiyuuuh noticed her video. But she said she would be happier if the government takes notice of the hardships of medical frontliners.

"'Hopefully mabigyang halaga mga medical health workers natin. Hopefully po tumaas na 'yung sahod kasi in reality, may pinagdadaanan din kami. Kailangan din naming mabuhay at kailangan din naming mabuhay ang pamilya namin," she added.

(Hopefully the government will notice the importance of our medical health workers. Hopefully they will increase our compensation because, in reality, we suffer too. We need to survive and we need to provide for our families too.)

Jazzmin asked the public to continue supporting medical workers since it encourages and uplifts the workers’ spirits. She also advised people to stay home and go out only when necessary. The nurse also appealed to people to be truthful about their medical and other details because lying about these creates greater risk for many others.

Jazzmin herself was about to resign last March, but decided to stay. She said her decision changed because of her desire to serve and save lives especially with the recent spike in coronavirus cases.

Jazzmin's video went viral and many netizens responded with sympathy for frontline health workers.
