PBBM Welcomes Duterte-Xi Meeting

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his support for the recent meeting between former President Rodrigo Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Speaking on Tuesday (July 18,2023), President Marcos welcomed the development as a new line of communication that could enhance understanding and help resolve differences between the Philippines and China.
During a media interview following his attendance at the launch of the Department of Social Welfare and Development's food stamps program, President Marcos stated his hope that the issues currently affecting both countries were discussed during the meeting. He emphasized the importance of progress and ongoing dialogue in addressing these concerns. President Marcos stressed that he welcomes any new lines of communication established with China.
The President further highlighted that the identity of the person holding discussions with President Xi is not crucial; what matters is that there is an open conversation taking place. President Marcos expressed his confidence that former President Duterte will provide information about the content of their conversation and its potential impact on the Philippines.
He also acknowledged that Duterte did not seek his permission before meeting with Xi. Reports indicate that President Xi expressed his desire for former President Duterte to continue playing a significant role in promoting cooperation between the Philippines and China.
