The Philippine team's work in southeast Turkey continues as they guide ongoing relief, rescue, and evacuation operations. Ambassador Maria Elena P. Algabre and Consul General Juan E. Dayang, Jr. recently briefed Filipino evacuees in Gaziantep on their efforts.
Over the past week, the team successfully evacuated four families from Gaziantep to the Turkish capital of Ankara. The distressed Filipinos were transported 700 kilometers by Sprinter buses and offered relief goods. However, some of those who chose to stay in Gaziantep kindly suggested that the relief goods be given to those who need them most.
The Embassy has received offers of assistance, such as toiletries, clothes, and food, and will continue to mobilize all interested parties. Appropriate medical assistance has also been extended to those in need.
Volunteers like Leona "Ghie" Gonzales have stepped forward to serve food for evacuees from Hatay Province currently sheltered in Ankara. The Embassy encourages all affected Filipinos to reach out for support and to ensure that rescue operations are efficient.
The Ambassador, along with the Consul General and the Defense and Armed Forces Attaché, personally thanked the 82-man Philippine Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent Team deployed to the neighboring Adıyaman province to provide crucial search and rescue and emergency medical assistance.
The Embassy is also arranging the immediate repatriation of the body of Wilma Abulad Tezcan, an OFW, as requested by her daughter with the consent of her husband. The Embassy is seeking consent from her husband regarding the treatment of her human remains.
