Tricycle driver creates steampunk mask to protect himself from Covid-19

RJ Sinco, a tricycle driver from Marilao, Bulacan, made a steampunk-style mask inspired by the costume designs of the movie Mad Max: Fury Road.

He made it during the lockdown last March, when all Public Utility Vehicles (PUVs) including tricycles were prohibited from operating.

"Noong March tigil lahat. Wala kaming biyahe ng three months. Ayon, naubusan ako ng gagawin," he said.

(All operations stopped last March. We did not operate for three months. I had nothing to do.)

To while away the time, RJ watched movies. One of those he saw was the post-apocalyptic Mad Max: Fury Road. The film’s main antagonist wore a face mask.

He did not spend a single penny to make the mask since most of the materials were found at his home. Hoses on the mask came from their aquarium. The chambers on both sides of the mask are made from small plastic bottles. The main material for the mask itself was an ice cream tub.

"Para hindi lang siya maganda sa paningin, gusto ko rin sana 'yung medyo functional. Kaya inaayos ko pa siya sa ngayon," he said.

(I don't want it to just look good, I want it to be functional too. I'm currently fixing it right now.)

RJ said he will continue to develop the mask until it becomes safe for use.
