A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao late Wednesday morning, giving residents quite a scare and sending people out of buildings for safety — but so far, no major damage has been reported.

The quake hit at 11:02 a.m. on January 7, with the epicenter located about 55 kilometers northeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at a depth of 23 kilometers.

It was felt strongest in Manay, Davao Oriental, as well as in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur and Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, where the shaking reached Intensity V. Meanwhile, residents in Bislig City, Cagwait, Tarragona and Cateel reported Intensity IV shaking. Lighter tremors were experienced in Tandag City, Boston, Baganga and Claver at Intensity III, while weaker movements were noted in Davao City, General Santos, Butuan, Baybay, Palo and parts of Southern Leyte at Intensity II.

Instrument readings also showed Intensity IV in Malungon, Sarangani, while Kiamba, Digos City and Davao City recorded Intensity III.

In Davao City, the quake prompted employees at City Hall to evacuate as a precaution. After a thorough inspection, the City Engineer’s Office declared the building safe, and work resumed later in the day.

Authorities are reminding everyone to stay calm, remain alert, and be prepared for possible aftershocks — but as of now, the situation remains under control.
