All Aboard: President Marcos Jr. Joins Navy's New Guided-Missile Frigate In Milestone Modernization Moment
Screengrab from RTVM
It was a proud and powerful day at sea as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stepped aboard the Philippine Navy’s newest guided-missile frigate, the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06), during the Navy’s 127th anniversary celebration at the Naval Operating Base in Subic, Zambales on May 20, 2025.
As the guest of honor and keynote speaker, the Commander-in-Chief led the christening and commissioning of two modern naval assets: the patrol gunboat PG909 and the guided-missile frigate FFG06—whose official names were unveiled during the ceremony. And yes, he didn’t just witness it from the sidelines—he toured the new frigate himself and received a full briefing on its capabilities.
These sleek and state-of-the-art vessels are more than just new additions to the fleet—they’re symbols of the country’s serious push toward a modernized, responsive, and capable Navy. Under President Marcos Jr.’s administration, the Armed Forces—especially the Navy—has been undergoing a major upgrade to ensure the Philippines can better protect its vast maritime territories.
“It’s a leap forward,” said many attendees, as they watched the Navy show off its cutting-edge tools during a capability demonstration aboard the FFG06. The President also took time to personally recognize the dedication of Navy personnel, handing out awards to several units and individuals for their exceptional service.
With the theme “Philippine Navy: Addressing Challenges, Promoting Regional Stability, and Strengthening Maritime Security,” this year’s celebration didn’t just highlight new ships—it emphasized the Navy’s unwavering role in safeguarding Philippine waters amidst growing regional challenges.
In a time where maritime security has never been more critical, the Navy’s modernization efforts—and the presence of the President himself aboard one of its newest warships—send a strong and clear message: the Philippines is ready to face the future at full speed ahead.
