Two moderate but distinct earthquakes were recorded just one second apart on the morning of June 24, 2025, off the northeastern coast of Mindanao. Though widely felt across several provinces, both events are not expected to cause any damage.
The first earthquake occurred at 9:58:08 AM and had a magnitude of 6.4. It struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, about 359 kilometers northeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental. This was immediately followed at 9:58:09 AM by a second quake, slightly weaker at magnitude 6.3, originating 341 kilometers from the same location and at a depth of 34 kilometers. Both quakes were tectonic in origin.
While the first earthquake is not expected to produce aftershocks, the second may still be followed by further seismic activity. Authorities have not issued any damage alerts, but continue to monitor the area.
Ground shaking was felt across various parts of Mindanao. Intensity III was reported in Bislig City in Surigao del Sur, as well as in Tarragona and Boston in Davao Oriental. Intensity II was observed in several areas including Lingig, Baganga, San Isidro, Mati City, Manay, Caraga, Glan, Tagum City, Davao City, Santa Cruz, and Tulunan. Weaker tremors (Intensity I) were noted in Barobo, Tagbina, Governor Generoso, Cateel, Digos City, and M’lang.
Instrumental monitoring detected Intensity II in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro. Light movements were also recorded at Intensity I in locations such as Bislig City, Matanao, Magsaysay, Don Marcelino, Gingoog City, Glan, Alabel, Kiamba, Koronadal, General Santos, Kidapawan, and M’lang.
Though no significant disruption has been reported, the occurrence of two closely timed quakes highlights the importance of maintaining preparedness in seismically active regions. Authorities continue to observe the area for any signs of aftershocks and advise the public to remain informed through official channels.
