Border Tensions Erupt As Thailand Hits Back At Cambodia's 'Repeated Violations'

Thailand is on high alert after back-to-back clashes along the Thailand–Cambodia border, prompting the Thai Foreign Ministry to brief diplomats on what it calls Cambodia’s escalating provocations.
Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow laid out Thailand’s position before 73 representatives, stressing five key points:
Cambodia is repeatedly violating Thai territory, planting new landmines, firing first, and spreading false information—all while portraying itself as the victim. Thailand, he said, is acting strictly in self-defense.
Clashes Leave Soldiers Dead and Injured
Since December 7, fighting has flared across multiple border areas.
• Cambodian troops allegedly fired into Thai territory, wounding two Thai soldiers.
• On December 8, fresh clashes erupted, killing one Thai soldier and injuring eight others.
• Thailand says Cambodia even launched BM-21 rockets into civilian areas.
Thailand confirmed launching limited airstrikes, citing landmines and self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Civilians Forced to Flee
The violence has displaced nearly 400,000 residents across four provinces — Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani.
More than 600 schools and several hospitals have closed, disrupting public services and daily life along the border.
Thailand Slams Cambodia’s ‘Disinformation Campaign’
Bangkok accused Cambodia of spreading false narratives, including:
• Using unrelated videos to claim Thai forces caused panic among Cambodian children
• Alleging Thailand initiated the latest attacks
Thailand insists these claims aim to distract the world from new Cambodian landmines recently exposed at an international conference in Geneva.
Diplomatic Moves Underway
Thailand has issued:
• A protest note to Cambodia
• Briefings to ASEAN members
• Notifications to the UN Secretary-General and UN Security Council President
Malaysia and the United States — witnesses to the October Joint Declaration — were also briefed.
The Foreign Ministry urged the public and media to rely on official information only, warning against disinformation that could fuel tension.
Thailand says all agencies remain united in one mission: protecting sovereignty and keeping citizens safe.
