FILE
Team Philippines kicked off the 33rd Southeast Asian Games with a flurry of bronze medals, proving early on that the delegation is ready to compete hard in Thailand.
In jiu-jitsu, Godwin Langbayan came out on top in an all-Filipino battle for bronze in the men’s -62kg division, edging out fellow Pinoy Rajae Del Rosario in a tightly contested match. The showdown guaranteed a medal for the country—what remained was who would claim it, and Langbayan delivered.
Taekwondo followed with another boost to the medal tally. Patrick King Perez and Jocel Lyn Ninobla secured bronze in the Mixed Pair Recognized Poomsae after completing a strong run on Day 1. Their performance added momentum to the Philippines’ early campaign in the Games.
Over at the Sepak Takraw courts, the medals kept coming. Minutes after the women’s team earned a podium finish, the men’s squad also claimed bronze in the Hoop event with 710 points. The lineup—John Deryck Diego, Emmanuel Escote, Vince Alyson Torno, Jason Huerte, Ronsited Gabayeron, and Marc Kian Jake Fuentes—finished behind powerhouses Thailand (880 points) and Myanmar (790).
And in cycling, the Philippines’ first medal of the Games came from the mountain bike trails. John Derick Farr delivered a strong run in the MTB Downhill event to clinch bronze, officially opening the medal count for the country.
With Day 1 already stacked with multiple podium finishes, Team Philippines is off to an energetic and promising start in Thailand.
