After a major earthquake struck Taiwan on April 3, 2024, at 07:58 AM Philippine Standard Time (PST), with a magnitude of 7.2 and located at 23.8oN, 121.7oE, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) swiftly issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities in several provinces. This warning urged immediate evacuation in Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Isabela based on initial evaluations.

However, sea level monitoring stations facing the epicentral area revealed no significant disturbances since the earthquake, prompting the cancellation of all tsunami warnings by DOST-PHIVOLCS. The potential threat has subsided, and coastal areas are no longer under imminent risk.

Meanwhile, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is closely monitoring the situation of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan. Following the earthquake, the DMW's offices in Taiwan swiftly activated protocols, coordinating with Filipino communities, relevant Taiwanese government agencies, employers, and trade associations to ensure the safety and well-being of OFWs. Immediate assistance will be provided to affected OFWs as necessary.

The earthquake, with its epicenter 25 kilometers south-southeast of Hualien County, has prompted vigilance across affected regions. As of December 2023, there are approximately 66,475 OFWs in Taiwan, highlighting the importance of swift and coordinated responses to natural disasters to ensure the safety of all residents and workers.
