Commuters using the EDSA Busway can now enjoy faster and more convenient travel following the official rollout of cashless fare payments using GCash by the Department of Transportation (DOTr). The launch was held on Wednesday at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX).
The initiative supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ease daily travel for passengers and encourage greater use of public transportation by improving the overall commuting experience.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the cashless option is meant to complement existing payment methods and provide passengers with a more hassle-free way to pay their fares. He emphasized that the move focuses not only on modernizing transport infrastructure and vehicles, but also on improving public service and the overall passenger experience.
The DOTr assured the public that no convenience or transaction fees will be charged for using GCash on the EDSA Busway. The 20 percent fare discount for students, persons with disability (PWDs), and senior citizens will also continue to apply to those who choose to pay through the cashless system.
As part of the launch, Lopez tested the cashless payment system during a trip from the EDSA Busway PITX Station to Santolan, together with officials from the DOTr, GCash, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), and the busway consortium.
To use the system, commuters only need to open the GCash app, select the scan-to-pay option, scan the QR code on the SoundPay device carried by the bus conductor, enter the fare amount, and confirm the payment.
GCash officials said the system uses advanced security features to ensure safe and reliable transactions. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas also welcomed the initiative, noting that digital payments allow commuters to pay the exact fare quickly while ensuring that payments go directly to operators.
The cashless payment system on the EDSA Busway is part of the Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) proof of concept, which aims to minimize cash handling and offer more convenient payment options to the public.
Currently, 260 bus units are equipped with GCash SoundPay devices. The pilot implementation of the cashless payment system on the EDSA Busway will run for one year.
