Screengrab from PCG
In a recent maritime patrol near Bajo De Masinloc, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel, BRP BAGACAY (MRRV-4410), alongside the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) vessel, BRP BANKAW (MMOV-3004), encountered aggressive maneuvers from Chinese Coast Guard vessels, escalating tensions in the disputed waters.
Commodore Jay Tarriela shared details of the encounter, highlighting the commitment to support Filipino fishermen and ensure food security in line with the President's policy. Despite the mission's peaceful intent to distribute fuel and food supplies, the patrol was met with obstruction and harassment.
Reports indicate that four China Coast Guard vessels and six Chinese Maritime Militia vessels engaged in dangerous maneuvers, culminating in the utilization of water cannons against the Philippine vessels. The BFAR vessel sustained direct hits from a water cannon, causing damage to its starboard astern, while the PCG vessel faced targeted assaults on its railing and canopy from jet stream water cannons.
Furthermore, the Chinese Coast Guard has reinstalled a 380-meter floating barrier, obstructing access to the shoal and further escalating tensions in the region.
Despite the provocative actions, both the PCG and BFAR vessels maintained their resolve, continuing their patrol to support Filipino fishermen and ensure their safety. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges in the disputed waters and the importance of upholding maritime rights in accordance with international law.
