Chris Newsome Proves He's More Than Just Defense With 5,000-Point Milestone

When you hear the name Chris Newsome, the first thing that usually pops into mind is defense. After all, the Meralco Bolts guard has built a reputation as one of the PBA’s top backcourt stoppers. But last week, Newsome reminded everyone that he’s not just about hustle plays and lockdown defense—he can light up the scoreboard, too.
In a Philippine Cup clash against Magnolia at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Newsome quietly made history by becoming the latest member of the PBA’s 5,000-point club. He crossed the milestone with 5:53 left in the game, finishing with 14 points. Sure, the Bolts couldn’t pull off the win that night (they lost 117-92), but Newsome’s personal feat was still a bright spot.
The 34-year-old guard was officially recognized for his scoring achievement during halftime of Meralco’s next game against Blackwater at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. Commissioner Willie Marcial presented him with a specially-crafted plaque, joined by Meralco governor Atty. Bill Pamintuan and Blackwater governor Siliman Sy.
According to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III, Newsome is the 99th player in league history to hit 5,000 points, the 94th among locals, and just the 14th active player to reach the mark. He also joins an elite list of Meralco players to have done it—alongside Mark Cardona, Mike Cortez, Nino Canaleta, and Reynel Hugnatan.
And in true Newsome fashion, he didn’t let the recognition slow him down. In that same game against Blackwater, he led the Bolts with a team-high 19 points to help Meralco snap their two-game skid and secure a 103-85 win. That win also bumped their record to 4-5 and gave fans a glimpse of what the team can do when Newsome is firing on both ends.
So yes, Chris Newsome will always be known for his defense. But if you didn’t already know—he’s got some serious scoring chops, too. And now, with 5,019 career points (and counting), the numbers speak for themselves.
