Chris Newsome is on a roll—and the PBA Press Corps has taken notice.
For the second week in a row, Newsome was named the PBA Press Corps–Pilipinas Live Player of the Week after delivering another standout performance for the Meralco Bolts. His latest nod covers the period of May 28 to June 1, during which he led Meralco to a crucial 82-73 win over Barangay Ginebra.
In that game, Newsome posted an all-around stat line: 16 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. His efforts helped the Bolts complete a late surge to finish the Philippine Cup eliminations with three straight wins and a 6-5 record.
This marks a rare back-to-back recognition for Newsome, joining the ranks of TNT’s Jayson Castro, who also pulled off consecutive Player of the Week honors during the 2022 Philippine Cup semifinals.
“Coming into this game, we really wanted to make sure that our destiny is in our hands and we didn’t want to leave it up to somebody else,” said Newsome after the Ginebra victory.
“We wanted to really come out and play playoff-atmosphere type of basketball—and that’s what we saw. It was a classic Ginebra-Meralco game, but for us, it’s really about getting through our lows. We really had deep lows this conference, and we just wanted to get through those, stay together, and come out and battle all the way through because you never know what could happen,” he added.
The win secured Meralco’s spot in the quarterfinals and handed them a much-needed boost of confidence after a rocky 3-5 start to their title defense. That momentum will be key as they shift gears for the Philippine Cup playoffs—and also look ahead to the Basketball Champions League Asia, where they’ll be tested against some of the best club teams in the region.
Newsome edged out strong weekly performances from Adrian Nocum (Rain or Shine), Almond Vosotros (TNT), and Javee Mocon (NLEX) for the award, which is voted on by sportswriters covering the PBA across various media platforms.
For now, it’s clear: Newsome is peaking at the right time, and Meralco is reaping the rewards.
