A resort situated dangerously close to Bohol's iconic Chocolate Hills, a UNESCO Heritage Geopark, has sparked outrage among netizens and environmentalists. The hills, declared the country's 3rd National Geological Monument in 1988, are revered for their scientific value and geomorphic uniqueness, attracting tourists from around the globe.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has issued a statement emphasizing the protected status of the Chocolate Hills since 1997, aiming to safeguard its geological formations and promote sustainable tourism. However, the recent construction of the Captain's Peak Resort at the foot of one of these hills in Sagbayan town has raised concerns over environmental degradation and disregard for preservation efforts.

In response to public outcry, the DENR has taken action, issuing a Temporary Closure Order to the resort last September and a Notice of Violation for operating without an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). As of March 13, 2024, the DENR Regional Executive Director has directed further inspection to ensure compliance with the closure order.

The controversy underscores the delicate balance between development and conservation in ecologically significant areas, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations to protect natural wonders for future generations.
