President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has garnered significant backing from the Czech Republic regarding the South China Sea (SCS) issue, emphasizing the importance of respecting a rules-based order and ensuring a free and open SCS for all nations involved.

During a joint press conference held in Prague on Thursday, Czech President Petr Pavel expressed his country's full support for the Philippines in asserting its entitlement to the free movement of goods in the SCS. President Pavel highlighted the critical role of this principle in maintaining global and regional stability.

President Pavel emphasized that despite the geographical distance, any disruption in the South China Sea could adversely affect Europe due to the significant percentage of global trade passing through the region. He underscored the necessity for attention to this issue to prevent shortages and price hikes in Europe.

In response, President Marcos underscored the importance of his discussions with Czech officials in ensuring peace in the South China Sea. He highlighted the shared values of the Czech Republic and the Philippines in upholding international law, emphasizing the importance of safe navigation and passage in the SCS for international trade.

President Marcos reiterated the Philippine stance of maintaining peace and defending sovereignty amidst international disputes. He emphasized the ongoing modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), with the Czech Republic playing a crucial role in this evolution through necessary procurements.

The state visit of President Marcos to Prague, upon President Pavel's invitation, aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and multilateral partnerships between the Philippines and the Czech Republic. Discussions during the visit have focused on defense, cybersecurity, and the development of high-tech industries, signaling a commitment to deepen ties between the two nations.
