In response to the 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Ehime and Kochi prefectures in western Japan on Wednesday, 17 April 2024, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has initiated proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the affected areas.

The DMW, through its Migrant Workers Offices (MWO) in Osaka and Tokyo, is actively engaging with employers and companies in Ehime and Kochi prefectures to assess the condition of OFWs. Advisory No. 04-2024, issued by MWO-Osaka today, emphasizes the importance of monitoring OFWs and reporting any incidents caused by the earthquake.

As of now, there are no reports of injuries or fatalities among Filipino workers. However, MWOs Tokyo and Osaka, in coordination with the Consulate General in Osaka and the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, remain vigilant and are closely monitoring the situation.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake's epicenter was located at the Bungo Suido channel, south of Osaka, with no tsunami generated. Tremors ranging from magnitude 1 to 4 were felt in the surrounding regions of Shikoku, Kyushu, and Chugoku.
