From Explosives To A New Life: Bomb Expert From Local Terror Group Surrenders For Peace

In a story that gives hope a fighting chance, a known bomb expert from a local terrorist group has finally chosen to leave his dangerous past behind—and start fresh with the government’s help.
This turning point happened last May 21, 2025, in Pigcalagan, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte, where the 35-year-old ex-rebel voluntarily surrendered to the 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT). His name isn’t being shared publicly just yet, for his own safety—but what’s clear is that his decision could change not just his life, but possibly inspire others still caught in the cycle of violence.
Brigadier General Jose Vladimir Cagara, the 1BCT commander, confirmed that the surrender was made out of fear for the man’s safety, especially as military operations against their group ramped up in recent months. But it wasn’t just fear—he admitted he was simply tired. Tired of hiding in the mountains, hungry, and constantly on the run.
And as proof that he’s serious about turning his back on his old life, he turned over his weapons too: a Uzi 9mm submachine gun and a 60mm improvised explosive device (IED).
Major General Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central, didn’t hold back in commending this bold move. “This is a big win for our anti-terrorism efforts,” he said. “Instead of choosing to spread violence, he chose peace. It just shows—it’s never too late to change. There’s always room for redemption and a fresh start.”
He also hopes this gesture sends a message loud and clear to other armed fighters still out there: You can come back. You can rebuild. The government’s reintegration program is here for those who are ready to embrace peace and pursue a better future.
From being a master of making bombs to now choosing to rebuild his life—this former rebel’s journey reminds us that even the darkest pasts can lead to brighter tomorrows.
