From Office To Oasis: Meralco's Urban Farms Take Root In Communities

In a refreshing twist on corporate sustainability, Meralco is literally going green — transforming its offices into thriving urban farms under its PowerPlants Urban Farming Program.

Driven by its advocacy Powering the Good Life, which is anchored in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the country’s largest power distributor has turned 17 of its facilities, including headquarters, business centers, and sector offices, into pockets of green productivity.

The idea is simple but powerful: grow fresh produce right where people work, and share the harvest with those who need it most.

“Our PowerPlants sites are more than just gardens,” a Meralco spokesperson said. “They’re living proof that sustainability can be integrated into daily operations while also giving back to the community.”

So far, more than 160 employee volunteers have joined the movement, with harvests benefitting close to 500 individuals — from Meralco staff to families in surrounding areas.

But Meralco isn't stopping at its own backyard. In 2025, it expanded the program through collaborations with local government units in Quezon City, helping to build urban farms in Barangays Talayan, Bahay Toro, and West Kamias.

These community-based initiatives are designed not only to boost local food security, but also to foster stronger public-private partnerships for environmental action.

With more green sites set to open and volunteer events gaining momentum, Meralco’s PowerPlants program shows how growing vegetables can grow values too — teamwork, care for the environment, and a shared sense of purpose.

Because at Meralco, sustainability doesn’t just power homes—it powers communities
