Heads-Up, Commuters: Here's What The Government Has Planned To Ease EDSA Rebuild Traffic Woes

If you're a regular EDSA commuter or motorist, brace yourself—but don’t panic. Big changes are coming, and the government says they're doing what they can to soften the blow.

On May 26, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) laid out their traffic game plan for the upcoming EDSA Rebuild project. This comes as part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ease the burden on commuters and motorists while this massive infrastructure work is underway.

So, what’s in store?

Here’s a quick rundown of the key traffic interventions announced:
• Free toll on parts of Skyway Stage 3 – Good news for those driving north to south! This move is meant to help decongest EDSA during construction.
• 100 additional buses for the EDSA Busway – Yep, more buses = less waiting time.
• More trains will also be deployed on MRT-3 to help move more passengers efficiently.
• An odd-even scheme on EDSA is being considered to manage vehicle volume.
• Expect clearing operations on alternate routes to make sure these backup roads are ready for more traffic.

According to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, the EDSA Busway will remain operational and dedicated even during construction, so Busway users can breathe a little easier.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan added that preparatory works for the EDSA Rebuild will begin on June 13. That gives us just a little time to adjust and plan ahead.

Long story short? The government says they’ve got our backs. Whether you're behind the wheel or catching a ride, these measures aim to keep things moving as smoothly as possible during this major overhaul.

Got alternate routes in mind? You might want to scout them out early. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to June!
