Heartbreak In Vancouver: Suspect Charged After Deadly Lapu Lapu Day Tragedy
It’s a heartbreaking time for the Filipino community in Vancouver — and for everyone who loves a good celebration of culture and history.
What should have been a joyful night during the Lapu Lapu Day festival ended in unimaginable tragedy Saturday night, when an SUV plowed into a crowd gathered along Fraser Street and East 43rd Avenue. Eleven lives, ranging from a young child to seniors, were lost. Dozens more were injured.
Vancouver Police quickly arrested a 30-year-old man, now identified as Kai-Ji Adam Lo. Thanks to brave bystanders who helped detain him at the scene, Lo is now facing serious charges. So far, he’s been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder, but authorities say more charges are likely coming as the investigation continues.
Some of the victims have yet to be identified, and police are urging anyone who hasn’t heard from a loved one to reach out. A 24-hour support center has been set up at Douglas Park Community Centre, and victim-liaison officers are standing by to help.
The whole city — and even the whole country — is mourning. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said he was “shocked and deeply saddened,” while former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and current Prime Minister Mark Carney also sent heartfelt messages, standing in solidarity with the Filipino community during this dark time.
Even Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. released a statement, saying he and the entire Filipino nation were “completely shattered” by the news. The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver is working closely with Canadian authorities to make sure the victims and their families get the support they need.
For our kababayans and OFWs who need immediate help, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has opened several hotlines both in Vancouver and back home in the Philippines.
Authorities are still piecing together exactly what happened and why. In the meantime, they’re calling on witnesses and anyone with photos or videos of the tragic incident to come forward and help the investigation.
Our hearts are with the families of those who lost their lives and everyone who’s hurting right now. The Filipino spirit is strong — and Vancouver’s community is even stronger.
