Speaker of the House Martin Romualdez has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the fatal shooting of Director Mauricio “Morrie” Pulhin, a respected and long-serving official of the House of Representatives. Director Pulhin, who served as Chief of Technical Staff for the Committee on Ways and Means, was gunned down over the weekend during his daughter’s birthday celebration in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through both Pulhin’s family and the wider congressional community.
“I am deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic death of Director Pulhin,” Speaker Romualdez said in a statement. “He was not only a valued colleague, but a dedicated public servant whose professionalism, integrity, and quiet commitment to duty earned the respect of all who worked with him.”
Initial reports from the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) indicate that two unidentified assailants entered the event venue and shot Pulhin at close range before fleeing on a motorcycle. As they escaped, they also fired at a subdivision security guard. Pulhin was rushed to the FEU-NRMF Hospital, where he was later declared dead. He was 63.
Law enforcement responded swiftly. Officers from Batasan Police Station 6 and the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) were immediately deployed, and a Special Investigation Team has been created to focus solely on resolving the case. The QCPD has also strongly condemned the killing, pledging to exhaust all efforts in pursuing the suspects.
Speaker Romualdez urged the Philippine National Police (PNP), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and other law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in their probe.
“While it is too early to determine the motive behind this heinous crime, all angles must be examined—including any links to his professional work. We expect a thorough, impartial, and swift investigation,” he said.
To Pulhin’s grieving family, the Speaker extended the House’s deepest condolences. “We stand with you in this time of unimaginable pain,” he said, vowing that the House leadership will do all it can to help ensure that justice is served—not just against the gunmen, but against whoever may have ordered the attack.
He also addressed the broader House Secretariat and congressional community: “We share your grief and your anger. Let us turn this sorrow into vigilance and unity. We must demand justice—not just for Director Pulhin, but for every Filipino victim of senseless violence.”
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Citizens may contact the PNP Hotline 911, QC Helpline 122, or +63 917 840 3925.
Speaker Romualdez closed his message with a firm call to action: “This crime must not go unanswered. Justice must prevail.”
