In response to a growing outbreak of pertussis, Iloilo City has declared a state of calamity, granting authorities additional resources to combat the infectious disease.

During a special session on March 26, the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDDRMC) to enact the state of calamity.

According to the City Health Office (CHO)-Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, as of March 26, 2024, there have been a total of 16 reported cases of pertussis, with seven confirmed cases. These cases are distributed across Molo, Jaro, Arevalo, and Lapuz districts.

The declaration of a state of calamity enables the city government to access the calamity fund for the procurement of essential medicines and vaccines. It also facilitates the implementation of strengthened measures and responses to contain and mitigate the spread of the disease.

Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory illness characterized by severe coughing fits. Prompt action is crucial to prevent further transmission within the community.
