The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has launched an inquiry into the cause of a fire that swept through the parking extension of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, engulfing at least 19 vehicles.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) confirmed the investigation Monday, saying statements from staff and witnesses will be crucial in unraveling the incident.

According to initial reports compiled by the MIAA, the fire is believed to have originated from a small grass fire. Eyewitnesses described a swift response from airport security, with a personnel member deploying multiple fire extinguishers in an attempt to contain the blaze.

Speaking to Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon, MIAA Spokesperson Atty. Chris Bendijo revealed that the Rescue and Firefighting Division (RFD) were alerted to the fire at 1:28 p.m., and successfully declared it extinguished by 1:57 p.m. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the aftermath of the incident.

General Manager Eric Ines expressed relief at the absence of casualties and pledged full cooperation with the BFP's investigation. Meanwhile, the MIAA clarified that liability for the incident falls on Philippine Skylanders International (PSI), the private concessionaire leasing the parking area.

PSI has assured affected vehicle owners of their commitment to addressing damages, with several already reaching out to the MIAA for assistance. In response, Ines has directed PSI to undertake measures to prevent future incidents, including the removal of dry grass and its replacement with crushed rock and gravel.

As a precaution, an MIAA-owned fire truck will be stationed near the area during the cleanup process. Additionally, vehicle owners are advised against leaving flammable items unattended in their cars. The MIAA is also considering deploying larger fire extinguishers to improve response capabilities in similar emergencies.
