LTFRB: No Fare Increase Approved Yet; Awaiting NEDA's Study Before Any Decision

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued a clear statement to the public: no fare increase for public utility vehicles (PUVs) has been approved at this time.

Amid growing speculation and calls from some transport groups for higher fares, the LTFRB has clarified that any adjustment to current fare rates is still under review. According to LTFRB Chairperson Atty. Teofilo Guadiz III, the agency is waiting for the results of an ongoing study by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), which will serve as the foundation for any future decisions on fare changes.

“We want to be clear: no fare increase has been approved at this stage,” Guadiz said. “The Board is still awaiting the results of NEDA’s economic impact study, which will serve as the basis for any future decision on fare adjustments.”

Guadiz emphasized that the Board remains committed to a measured, data-informed approach that balances the operational needs of transport operators with the financial capacity of everyday commuters. He noted that the current economic climate requires careful consideration before making any decisions that could affect the riding public.

“Fare adjustments are a serious matter that require careful study, especially considering the current economic conditions,” he explained. “We are not rushing into a decision. We are waiting for NEDA’s analysis, and the Board will act based on facts and expert recommendation.”

The LTFRB is working closely with NEDA and other concerned agencies to ensure any changes are grounded in evidence and aligned with public interest. The agency has also reiterated that only official announcements should be considered reliable, as misinformation may contribute to public confusion or unnecessary concern.

Calls for a fare hike have been driven in part by the rising cost of fuel, which has been influenced by ongoing global issues, including the war in Ukraine and growing tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Iran and Israel.

While the challenges faced by drivers and operators are acknowledged, the LTFRB maintains that the welfare of commuters and the broader economic impact must also be carefully weighed.

The Board encourages the public to stay updated through official LTFRB communications and assures that once NEDA’s study is completed, a transparent and timely decision will follow.
