A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck just off General Nakar, Quezon this Tuesday afternoon, May 27, 2025, at around 12:17 PM. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the quake’s epicenter to be located approximately 24 kilometers northwest of General Nakar, at coordinates 14.78°N, 121.39°E.
The quake had a shallow depth of just 6 kilometers, which often means the shaking on the surface can feel stronger compared to deeper quakes. According to PHIVOLCS, the origin was tectonic in nature—meaning it was caused by the movement of the Earth’s crust, likely along a fault line.
Authorities have already raised alerts for possible damage in nearby areas and are urging residents to be cautious, especially since aftershocks are expected.
If you’re in Quezon or surrounding provinces and felt the tremor, you’re not alone. Many residents took to social media to share their experiences—some reporting that furniture rattled and buildings swayed lightly.
Local disaster risk reduction units are currently monitoring the situation and are asking everyone to stay updated through official sources. People are also advised to check their homes and buildings for any signs of structural damage and to have their emergency kits ready just in case.
Stay safe, and remember: aftershocks can still happen, so it’s best to stay alert and informed.
