In a meaningful step forward for corporate sustainability, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by Manuel V. Pangilinan, has forged a partnership with Plastic Flamingo Philippines, Inc. (PLAF)—a social enterprise committed to tackling plastic pollution. This collaboration strengthens Meralco’s broader sustainability agenda by transforming plastic waste into something more valuable: long-lasting construction materials and eco-friendly furniture.

The partnership was formalized through a memorandum of agreement under which Meralco will turn over its collected plastic waste to PLAF for upcycling. For Meralco, it’s more than just responsible disposal—it’s about creating long-term environmental value.

“Proper waste management is only the beginning. Real sustainability is finding ways to convert waste into something that benefits both the environment and the communities around us,” said Jerry B. Lao, Meralco Vice President and Head of Facilities and Safety Management.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho echoed this sentiment, highlighting that Meralco’s sustainability strategy isn’t just about compliance—it’s a conscious and ongoing transformation.

“With PLAF’s help, we are turning our plastic waste into useful materials—diverting them away from landfills and oceans, and contributing to a circular economy,” Aperocho said.

PLAF, a French-founded social enterprise with operations in the Philippines, is known for giving plastic waste a second life by upcycling it into usable goods while preventing marine pollution. The organization sees this partnership as a step toward wider corporate engagement in environmental stewardship.

“By working together, we are setting an example of how corporations can lead the way in environmental stewardship and foster circular economy practices,” said Krisha G. Rubia, PLAF Partnerships and Operations Manager.

This collaboration is the latest chapter in Meralco’s Race to Zero Waste program, a sustainability initiative launched in 2020 aimed at minimizing waste generation and maximizing diversion from landfills. One of the program’s landmark moves was the 2019 ban on single-use plastics across Meralco facilities, which helped raise the company’s waste diversion rate from 17% to an impressive 95%.

“This partnership with PLAF builds on that achievement, translating our sustainability efforts into real, measurable, and meaningful impact for both people and the planet,” said Raymond B. Ravelo, Meralco First Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer.

But for Meralco, Race to Zero is more than just a campaign—it’s a shift in mindset.

“More than just a program, Race to Zero is a movement within our company—one that challenges how we manage our waste, how we consume, and how we can be more mindful stewards of the environment,” added Aperocho.

With its sustainability agenda, Powering the Good Life, Meralco continues to align its operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The company’s efforts span four key pillars—Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity—reflecting a deep and deliberate commitment to building a better, more sustainable future.
