Meralco Sparks Audit Curiosity, Inspiring The Next Generation Of Internal Auditors

Who says internal auditing is all about crunching numbers and ticking boxes? At Meralco, it’s a whole lot more.
In celebration of International Audit Awareness Month, the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) opened its doors—and its expertise—to future professionals through an engaging learning session that aimed to spark curiosity and passion for internal auditing.
The session, dubbed “Sparking Internal Audit Literacy,” was spearheaded by Meralco’s Internal Audit Office and welcomed over 100 students and faculty members from top universities such as Far Eastern University, De La Salle University, University of Asia and the Pacific, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and reps from the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants.
And it wasn’t just a sit-and-listen event. Students got front-row access to thought leaders and professionals from the Institute of Internal Auditors Philippines and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association. They shared the ins and outs of the profession—from today’s audit trends to the increasingly crucial role of cybersecurity, fraud risk management, and tech-enabled audits.
Meralco leaders also took center stage to showcase their Internal Audit Capability Model, with a strong message that audit is more than rules—it’s about resilience, ethics, and innovation.
Melanie T. Oteyza, Meralco’s Senior Vice President and Group Chief Audit Executive, hit the nail on the head when she said,
“Internal auditing is not just about compliance or numbers. It is about foresight, integrity, and the courage to ask the right questions—even when the answers may be uncomfortable.”
Oteyza emphasized that in a fast-evolving world filled with disruption and technological leaps, internal audit acts as a compass, helping organizations navigate through complexity and change.
Meralco’s commitment to the profession doesn’t stop there. Their Internal Audit Office recently earned praise from PwC Philippines for upholding global standards and ethical practices. Notably, Meralco achieved the highly coveted “Trusted Advisor” status and landed in the top quartile in both Asia Pacific and global industry benchmarks for internal auditing—a major win for audit excellence.
