In a resounding affirmation of its forward-looking leadership, the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) earned widespread international recognition at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Stevie® Awards held in Seoul, South Korea. The company secured 11 honors across various categories, reflecting its unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive progress.

Leading the way was MTerra Solar—touted as the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage facility—which earned two Gold Stevies for Sustainability & Climate Protection Services and Product Design & Development. Designed to supply clean energy to approximately 2.4 million households and cut down carbon emissions by an estimated 4.3 million tons annually, MTerra stands as a landmark achievement not just for Meralco, but for global clean energy development. The project was also recognized with a Bronze Stevie under the Sustainable Business Models category, underscoring its role in transforming energy systems with long-term impact.

Adding to Meralco’s accolades, First Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Raymond B. Ravelo was named Climate Hero of the Year, bringing in another Gold Stevie for the company. Ravelo was lauded for steering Meralco’s ambitious transition towards a coal-free future and embedding sustainability across the enterprise. His leadership has been instrumental in reshaping the company’s environmental agenda while reinforcing its core business objectives.

“This global recognition affirms our belief that doing what is right for our planet, people, and communities is also good for business,” Ravelo said. “Indeed, these honors fuel our passion to build a more sustainable and equitable energy future for all.”

Meralco’s silver-winning Race to Zero Waste Program also captured attention. With a 95% waste diversion rate, it far exceeds the industry average and demonstrates how corporate ecosystems can be designed to thrive through reuse, recycling, and active community participation.

The company’s broader sustainability vision, Powering the Good Life, received a Bronze Stevie for Climate Protection and Sustainability Campaign of the Year. Rooted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the initiative brings together Meralco’s work across clean energy, environmental stewardship, and social impact under one comprehensive framework.

Among the other Bronze-winning initiatives were BulacanSol, a solar development project aligned with Meralco’s goal of becoming coal-free by 2050; #Mbrace, the company’s diversity and inclusion program; and Pangako and Pangarap, two creatively crafted annual and sustainability reports showcasing the company’s financial and social impact through storytelling and transparency.

Also recognized was the Meralco Liwanag Park, honored for highlighting the company’s dedication to community engagement and public service through a unique internal corporate event celebrating shared values and partnerships.

Stevie Awards President Maggie Miller described this year’s entries as outstanding, praising the innovation and determination that organizations like Meralco demonstrated across all nominations. The 2024 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards received over a thousand entries from 29 markets, with winners selected by more than 120 international business leaders serving as judges.

With this recognition, Meralco not only continues to lead the Philippine power industry, but also strengthens its role as a sustainability and innovation leader on the global stage.
