Filipina Olympic figure Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworski just scored a major leadership role on the global sports stage.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that Jaworski will now serve as Chair of the Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games Brisbane 2032. This big news came straight from IOC President Thomas Bach, who made the appointment following a request from incoming IOC President Kirsty Coventry. Coventry recently stepped down from the role after her historic election, and it’s Jaworski who’s now taking the baton.
For those unfamiliar, this Commission plays a crucial behind-the-scenes role—it ensures that everything for the Olympic Games runs smoothly, from venue construction to fan experience, all while keeping sustainability and inclusion front and center. In other words, Jaworski is now at the heart of Olympic planning for the next Summer Games.
It’s a role that seems tailor-made for her.
Not only is she a veteran IOC Executive Board member (since 2020), but she also has deep personal and professional ties to Australia. She trained and competed in the country—Brisbane included—throughout her career as an equestrian athlete. And she didn’t just compete; she thrived. Jaworski brought home gold and silver medals at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan and clinched team gold at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in Manila.
Jaworski will officially chair the next Coordination Commission meeting in Brisbane from May 20 to 22, working closely with the local Organising Committee, international sports federations, and other stakeholders to shape an Olympic experience that’s worthy of the world stage.
But this isn’t her first rodeo in Olympic planning. She’s already served on the coordination teams for Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024, and even Brisbane 2032, plus evaluation commissions for the 2024 and 2028 Games. On top of that, she currently leads the IOC’s Olympic Education Commission and sits on several others, ranging from digital engagement to esports.
With the Brisbane 2032 Games set for July 23 to August 8 (and the Paralympics following shortly after), there’s plenty of work ahead. But with Jaworski at the helm, expect an Olympic event that champions both tradition and progress—an Olympic celebration that reflects the future of sport and the diverse global community it serves.
And for the Philippines? This is another proud moment to see one of our own shaping the biggest sporting event on Earth.
