NAMFREL Founder, Jose S. Concepcion Jr., Passes Away At 92

The National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) revealed the passing of its founding National Chairperson, Jose S. Concepcion Jr., widely known as JoeCon or JCJ. The visionary leader, who played a pivotal role in inspiring ordinary Filipinos to champion free and fair elections, breathed his last at the age of 92.

Jose S. Concepcion Jr., a passionate advocate for democratic values, founded NAMFREL, marking the birth of the first citizen-led national election monitoring organization globally. His charismatic leadership and unwavering commitment to the cause prompted hundreds of thousands of Filipinos to join NAMFREL, turning it into a beacon of hope for electoral transparency.

Known for his belief in the transformative power of ordinary citizens, Mr. Concepcion's favorite mantra was, "It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness." His legacy endures in the hearts of every NAMFREL Bantay ng Bayan volunteer, tirelessly working to carry forward the mission initiated by Mr. Concepcion and his fellow pioneers.

The former Trade Secretary passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Survived by his wife, Maria Victoria Araneta, eight children, 31 grandchildren, and his twin brother, Raul, Mr. Concepcion leaves behind a rich tapestry of family and a nation indebted to his indomitable spirit.

To pay respects to the departed leader, public viewing is scheduled from March 7 to March 10, between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. at the Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City. A Requiem Mass in honor of Jose S. Concepcion Jr. will be held on March 11 at 1:15 p.m. at the Santuario de San Antonio Parish Church in Forbes Park, Makati City.
