Severe Tropical Storm Crising (international name Wipha), coupled with the enhanced southwest monsoon, has brought widespread rains and flooding across the Philippines, affecting more than 225,000 families and leaving at least two people dead, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Monday.

In its latest situation report, the agency confirmed two fatalities — one each in Northern Mindanao and Caraga. These are among five reported deaths, with the remaining three still undergoing verification: two in Northern Mindanao and one in the Davao Region.

Authorities are also validating reports of seven missing persons as rescue and relief operations continue in hard-hit areas.

The NDRRMC said that a total of 225,985 families, or about 800,864 individuals, were affected across 1,556 barangays in 16 regions nationwide. Of these, more than 20,000 people are currently taking shelter in 319 evacuation centers, while another 70,720 people are receiving assistance while remaining outside evacuation facilities.

The Office of Civil Defense clarified that the count of affected families includes both those who were displaced from their homes and those who remained in place but experienced significant hardship.

Damage to homes and infrastructure has been widespread. The storm and monsoon rains damaged 1,234 houses in at least a dozen regions. Of these, 935 were partially damaged while 299 were completely destroyed. Meanwhile, infrastructure damage has been estimated at roughly PHP219.3 million, with losses reported in Regions 1 (Ilocos), Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

The NDRRMC continues to monitor the situation and coordinate with local government units as more data come in. Relief operations are ongoing to assist affected families, especially in the most severely impacted communities.

Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant as weather disturbances are expected to continue affecting parts of the country in the coming days.
