New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's upcoming official visit to the Philippines signifies the deepening relationship between the two nations and underscores the importance of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s development plans, according to outgoing New Zealand Ambassador Peter Francis Tavita Kell.

Luxon's visit, scheduled for Thursday, will include meetings with President Marcos at the Palace, aiming to bolster bilateral ties as both countries approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026.

Ambassador Kell, whose tenure was briefly extended for Luxon's visit, expressed confidence in leaving behind a stronger Philippine-New Zealand relationship, citing the support and collaboration between the two nations.

President Marcos expressed gratitude for Ambassador Kell's efforts over the past four years, acknowledging the positive impact on bilateral relations.

Formal diplomatic ties between the Philippines and New Zealand date back 57 years, with trade and tourism steadily growing. Last year, trade between the two countries amounted to US$495.37 million, with tourism numbers also showing significant increase.

Additionally, pending the results of the 2023 NZ Census, the Filipino community in New Zealand is estimated to have grown significantly, indicating the deepening people-to-people ties between the two nations.
