PCG Gets The Job Done: Atin Ito Convoy Safely Escorted To Pagasa Island Amid Chinese Presence
As of 3 PM today, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has proudly announced a successful mission: both BRP Melchora Aquino and BRP Malapascua have safely escorted the Atin Ito civilian convoy from El Nido Port all the way to waters near Pagasa Island in Palawan. The convoy’s main vessel, M/V Kapitan Oca, is now securely anchored around 4.5 nautical miles northeast of Pagasa.
The mission wasn’t without tension. Just a short distance away, three China Coast Guard (CCG) ships are hovering nearby. CCG 5103 sits roughly 1.72 nautical miles west of Pagasa Island, while CCG 21559 is keeping a 2-nautical-mile distance from the Kapitan Oca. Another vessel, CCG 3306, is positioned about 4.6 nautical miles out.
If that’s not enough, a fleet of 22 Chinese Maritime Militia vessels has also been spotted anchored around Pagasa Cay 2, 3, and 4 — just 1.5 nautical miles off the starboard side of the PCG’s MRRV 9702.
Despite these developments, the PCG remains calm, composed, and laser-focused on its priority: keeping civilians safe. The Atin Ito convoy, composed of various civil society groups, is staging a symbolic and peaceful concert near Pagasa to assert the country’s rights in the West Philippine Sea.
The PCG assures the public that it is keeping a close watch on the situation, determined to protect both Filipino and foreign participants from any potential threats. Their message is loud and clear: the Philippines is watching, standing firm, and escorting its people — safely and with dignity — through these contested waters.
