Philippines And New Zealand Affirm Need For Rules-Based Order In South China Sea

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon jointly addressed concerns over recent developments in the South China Sea during Luxon's two-day official visit to Manila. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of upholding international law, including the UNCLOS, in resolving disputes and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.

They emphasized the significance of the 2016 arbitral award and called for the full implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.

Luxon acknowledged the Philippines' role in ASEAN and highlighted the enduring cooperation between the two countries, with approximately 100,000 Filipino migrants currently in New Zealand.
