Pia Cayetano Backs Gwen Garcia Amid Suspension: 'Leadership Means Showing Up In A Crisis'

In a strong show of support, Senator Pia Cayetano spoke up on May 5 regarding the suspension of Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, stressing the importance of fairness, especially when a leader is being called out for stepping up during a crisis.
“Public service, especially in the face of crisis, demands decisive and timely action,” Cayetano said in a statement. “Leadership is about stepping up, taking action, and bearing the weight of responsibility.”
Governor Gwen Garcia has come under fire following her actions during Cebu’s water crisis, which sparked controversy and eventually led to her suspension. But for Cayetano, Garcia’s response shouldn’t be dismissed so quickly.
“She’s one of the few women in our country holding high elected office, and she’s shown what it means to lead with conviction,” the senator pointed out, adding that Garcia’s track record speaks volumes—marked by consistency, visibility, and a strong connection with her constituents.
Cayetano acknowledged the urgency of the water issue and emphasized that Garcia “showed up when the province and her constituents needed her most.”
As things continue to develop, the senator called for fairness and due process. “I hope the process remains fair and impartial—because leaders, especially women, who step up in difficult times should be given a fair chance to be heard.”
