PISTON Pushes Back Against Forced Consolidation

In response to the LTFRB MC 2024-001, which outlines guidelines for withdrawal from consolidation, the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) asserts that the provisions are insufficient. They argue that the current regulations only cater to applicants awaiting consolidated permits, neglecting the rights of existing operators to fully withdraw from consolidation or reclaim their individual franchises.

Many operators were coerced into consolidation due to LTFRB-imposed deadlines. However, through collective action, these deadlines have been successfully pushed back multiple times.

Critics highlight the government's persistence in enforcing consolidation, which they claim serves the interests of corporations rather than the livelihoods of drivers and operators. Allegations persist that figures like Marcos Jr., along with officials in the DOTr and LTFRB, advocate for consolidation to facilitate corporate acquisition of franchises and routes.

As another deadline looms, it becomes apparent that consolidation has not led to progress in the livelihoods of drivers and operators.
