In a deeply moving moment for Catholics around the world, the late Pope Francis’ body will be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica this Wednesday at 9:00 AM, where it will lie in state until his funeral on Saturday morning.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the process begins with a solemn prayer at the Casa Santa Marta, led by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. From there, the Pope’s coffin will make its way through Santa Marta Square, the Square of the Roman Protomartyrs, and out through the Arch of the Bells before entering St. Peter’s Basilica through the central door.
Once inside, the Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at the Altar of the Confession, marking the beginning of the public visitation. It’s a chance for the faithful to come, pay their respects, and pray for the soul of their beloved pontiff.
Then, on Saturday at 10:00 AM, the funeral Mass will take place, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. He will be joined by Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests from around the world in a beautiful and solemn celebration of Pope Francis’ life and ministry.
After the funeral Mass, there will be the traditional Ultima commendatio and Valedictio rites—special prayers entrusting Pope Francis to God—before the Church begins the Novemdiales, nine days of mourning and Masses offered for his soul.
Finally, his body will be moved to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for entombment, resting forever in one of the most sacred places in Rome.
As millions around the world join in prayer, this week will be a time of deep reflection, gratitude, and farewell for a pope who touched countless lives.
