According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, Luzon experienced a shortage in electricity supply on April 16, 2024, due to dwindling power reserves in various power plants.

The grid alert status indicated critical periods of power deficit, with red alerts from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, while yellow alerts were raised from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Despite an available capacity of 13,537MW, the peak demand is projected to reach 13,024MW.

The situation is exacerbated by nineteen power plants under forced outage and three operating at derated capacities, resulting in 2,117.3MW being unavailable to the grid.

Red alert status indicates insufficient power supply to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirements, while yellow alert signifies an insufficient operating margin to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirements. Citizens are advised to conserve energy during these critical periods to mitigate potential disruptions.
